Well, I sure took my sweet time, but here it is. It is unedited and unpolished. It is also more likely to appeal to kids than to adults, but there is stuff to be learned. Enjoy.

Chivi, the old grey monkey opened one eye to be greeted by the sight of his two grandsons, Billi and Kalli, staring at him. He tried to close it before they noticed, determined to enjoy basking in the hot midday sun.

"He's awake!" cried Billi as the both jumped onto his chest, knocking the wind out of him.

"Tell us a story!" said Kalli. "You said you would tell us a story today."

"Foul little pests," said Chivi, pushing them off. "I've a mind to go back to sleep and let you wait for your story. Jumping on an old monkey like that. Phaw! Kids never got away with that sort of behavior when I was young."

They both sat back and stared at him; big eyes open wide, lips beginning to quiver.

"Don't you two give me that look," said Chivi with a scowl. "I know what you're up to. Trying to make me feel bad, phaw! I'll not have it this time. I need my nap!" Billi and Kalli walked away, heads lowered and tails limp. "Oh, alright," said Chivi. "I'll tell you a story but you have to promise to let me sleep tomorrow afternoon."

"Tell us the one about the crocodile!" said Kalli, eagerness shining in his eyes. "The one where you fight it off with a stick and chase it into the swamp!"

"I want to hear the story of the little monkey who ate too much food and turned into a hippo!" said Billi.

Chivi sat back, making himself comfortable against the tree trunk. The twins inched closer, awaiting his decision.

"I think I'll tell you one you haven't heard before," said Chivi. "This happened many years ago, back when I was still young and my family lived near the tree of Rami the Leopard…"

"Be careful," Mabo's parents had always said. "Rami may be old but his claw and teeth are still sharp." Every monkey's parents had given their children the same warning. They were not to go anywhere near the tree of the old leopard.

Mabo swung through the upper branches of the nearest tree, getting a closer look. He was the best climber in the family and he was confident that nothing could catch him among the branches. Rami lay on one of the lower branches, snoring softly. Mabo chuckled to himself. All Rami did was lay around all day, getting down once a day to go to the water hole and to find something too slow to get away from him. There was no way he could catch Mabo. He took a leap and landed in the upper branches of Rami's tree. The leopard slept on. Mabo began to feel braver and inched closer to the sleeping form until he was right beside him. In a fit of daring, he reached out and yanked the twitching tail. Rami woke up with a snarl but Mabo was already swinging back to his own tree, feeling elated that he had outwitted the leopard.

The next day, Mabo's friends were watching him as he crept through the branches by Rami's tail. A pull and a snarl later, Mabo was swinging back to the tree where his friends awaited to congratulate him on his daring. This continued for a few days before no one showed up to watch anymore. Mabo knew that he needed to do something more daring go regain his newfound popularity. He spread the word that the next day, he would pull Rami's whiskers.

Everyone was watching in silence as Mabo tiptoed up to Rami's face. He was a couple feet away when he began to have second thoughts. Surely Rami would smell him when he got too close. He would be in range of those large teeth and sharp claws. He considered backing out but everyone was watching him. He would never hear the end of it if he gave up after going so far. He eased closer and grabbed the whiskers to give them a pull. That's when Mabo saw Rami open his eyes. With a squeal of terror, he bolted for the safety of the other tree but before he could make it, he felt powerful jaws clamp down on his tail and pull him back into the reach of Rami's claws…

Billi and Kalli sat still, jaws hanging in disbelief.

"What?" said Chivi, scratching his head. That's the end. I don't think I need to tell you what happened to Mabo after that." Kalli was the first to speak.

"I didn't like that story Grandpa," he said in a small voice. "I didn't like it at all."

"I didn't tell it to you because I thought you'd like it," replied Chivi. "If you two are smart, you might learn something from it. Now, I have a nap that I need to finish." With that, he rolled over and closed his eyes. He heard them scamper away.

"Grandpa?" It was Billi, who was hanging from a nearby branch. "What was I supposed to learn from that story?"

"It's not about what you're supposed to learn," replied Chivi. "It's about what you did learn. One day, you might be tempted to do what Mabo did. When that time comes, I hope you'll make the right choice." With that, Chivi closed his eyes and resumed his nap.
