Britt gave me the subject of glow-in-the-dark ceiling stickers to write about but first, a little story for you all.

Steak... I don't know how else to put it. Every description of this wonderful food falls short of the word. It is my favorite main course and second favorite food. My favorite is apple pie, but we'll talk about that another time. My story is that one time I ordered a medium-rare steak in a restaurant. When it got to the table, it was well-done. My mind found itself unable to wrap around the concept. A wonderful food so poorly done... How could this happen? My joy at seeing a steak was only matched by my revulsion at the poor quality of its preparation. In this moment, I became a prime example of dacrygelosis. (Look it up.) On the surface I was sporting a blank stare, but on the inside I was hopping back and forth faster than a kid who REALLY has to use the bathroom. Joy at seeing a steak, sadness to see the juice cooked out of it, anger at the chef, hope in the possibility that they would cut the cost of my meal because of the mistake. Talk about rapid mood swings. In the end though, it all worked out. They did take off half of the price. I got a poorly done steak for the price of their chicken strips. I was pretty happy.

Anyway, onto the stickers.

In the darkness of night, when I was but a wee child, I would look up at my ceiling and gaze at those glow-in-the-dark stickers on my ceiling. Stars, planets, comets and spaceships. It really did bring some light to a dark room. Then, I would turn on the light and they would vanish.

We are capable of good deeds without God in our lives. We are capable of making a difference. In a world that is dark, these deeds are small lights that contrast the black. True, they are very dim and don't give enough light to be of use, but they are still a comfort. When we become children of God though, the switch is turned on and His POWER fills us. We become a light that is so much brighter than our feeble efforts of times passed. Darkness is driven out and we can see what is around us.

We must remember that our good deeds, when done without God, are nothing more than a speck of light that will never pierce the darkness. We need His power. Period.
